OAcademics @ OList.com

OAcademics is a private e-mail forum for Objectivist academics to discuss teaching, research, coursework, dissertations, job prospects, publication, and all other aspects of life in (or after) academia. The list is basically a means of sharing knowledge and experience as ever more Objectivists enter academia.

Subscription

To join the OAcademics mailing list, you must meet two criteria:

  • You must be an Objectivist, meaning that you agree with and live by the principles of Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism as best you understand them. Newcomers to Objectivism are just as welcome as old-timers. Please do not subscribe if you choose to associate with dishonest pseudo-advocates of Objectivism such as Nathaniel Branden, Barbara Branden, Chris Sciabarra, and David Kelley.

  • You must be an academic in higher education. The list isn't limited to philosophers. All Objectivists in academia, whether professors or graduate students (MA or Ph.D), are welcome. Those in the process of applying to graduate school are also welcome to join.

If you do not clearly meet those criteria, you should not subscribe without first e-mailing the list owner, Diana Hsieh, diana@dianahsieh.com.

The OAcademics list is managed through Google Groups. You can request a subscription via this web interface. You will be asked to confirm that you meet the two criteria for membership. Subscription requires an account with Google. (It's free and easy to create.)

After you subscribe, please feel free to post an introduction, including your name, school, field, status, interests, and so on.

List Rules

No subscriber is obliged to participate in list discussions. However, subscribers are particularly encouraged to:

  • Post the syllabi from the courses you teach (including the list of readings) at the beginning of every semester so that others may consult them in the process of their own course development.

  • Post any significant announcements about your work, e.g. the successful defense of a dissertation, an article accepted for publication, a fabulous new teaching job, leaving academia to hunt bears in Alaska.

These are strong recommendations but not ironclad obligations.

The list is not moderated. Posts should be polite, friendly, and reasonably relevant to life in academia. Messages will be archived, but those archives will be available only to other list members. List members should not forward list messages to anyone else or post them to any other forum without permission from the author(s).

List Mechanics

Mail to OAcademics should be addressed to oacademics@olist.com or oacademics@googlegroups.com. (Mail to the former address is automatically forwarded to the latter address.)

If you are a subscriber, you can access OAcademics through this web interface. There, you can peruse the archives and change your subscription.
